The LABO# is a musical composition project based in Belgium, whose goal is to bring together young professionals and amateurs of any lifetime during a 9 month working period. This group of about 5 to 10 participants is supervised by a professional composer and a musical ensemble (in general a soloist, a duo, or a soloist with a sound-designer when electronics are present).

The project starts with a 5 day residence (in Wallonie – the French speaking region of south Belgium) and ends with a concert tour (countrywide) where the artistic work is created. In between, several one-day meetings are planned in order to allow the participants to develop their artistic projects with the support of the experienced musicians.

Although in the past participants sometimes originated from neighbour countries (France, Germany, Netherlands), the artistic direction team has always been recruited from Belgian music schools (“conservatoires”) and orchestras, or were freelance musicians or ensembles.

The LABO# was inspired by other two composition workshop experiences: the first one was a compostion workshop initiated at the University of Louvain-la-Neuve by composer Pierre Bartholomée and professor Thierry De Smet, inviting the students or researchers to develop writing skills from their scientific knowledge,  while the second one is a composition summer school by composer Peter Swinnen in Anjou (France) organised by ARAM and the Danel string quartet.

On this website you will find informations about the past editions of the project (LABO# précédents).
